If I were

Oswald Lutepo

One of the suspects in the Cashgate scandal, I would be careful with the way I am implicating people by each passing day, the latest being former president Joyce Banda.

If I were the business magnate that is Oswald I would realise that while my claims could have a grain of truth, it is difficult for the nation to take me seriously because I keep on changing my statements.

I would recall that I did implicate former Attorney General Ralph Kasambara and others, but changed tune in court later on claiming that I implicated him because former DPP Bruno Kalemba, former Justice Minister Fahad Assani and private prosecutor Kamudoni Nyasulu were forcing me to write false witness and caution statements to implicate Kasambara.

I would also recall, if I were one Lutepo, that I admitted to lying before oath in court on April 9 against fellow suspect Victor Sithole and no wonder, the court charged me with perjury.

If I were Lutepo, I would conduct some serious soul-searching on what I was asked by Kalekeni Kaphale [when he was still in private practice] if I was stupid based on my contradictory statements.

I would also realise if I were Lutepo that the question people will be asking is why implicate the former president now when I had all the time to do so? It paints a picture of someone who is desperate for public sympathy.

If only I were Lutepo, I would know that someone who keeps on changing statements is known as a liar and reduces him or herself to a mere cartoon.
