Karonga district commissioner (DC) Paul Kalilombe says government plans to construct an official house for Paramount Chief Kyungu of Karonga and Chitipa districts.

In an interview on Saturday, the DC said government appreciates the role traditional leaders play in preserving culture.

“Besides, chiefs also help to foster development in the country,” he said.

Karonga district director of public works Allan Chitete said the contractor, Horizon Building and Civil Engineering Contractors, will do the work.

“The process of identifying the contractor is done and we are just waiting for the place to be identified so that the contractor begins the construction works which will take 120 days to complete,” he said.

When contacted, Paramount Chief Kyungu thanked government for the plans to construct the official house for the chieftaincy.

He said: “This is the first time in the history of the Kyungu chieftaincy to have official residence.

“From the colonial time to independence, it is only Paramount Chief Kyungu that has never had an official house.”

Kyungu said in consultation with the seven royal members, they identified Mbande Hill as the site for the official house, adding that they chose the place because it was the original habitant of the first Kyungu.
