Mchinji assistant director of agriculture and development officer Stater Magombo says adoption of recommended farming technologies is key to an inclusive wealthy and self-reliant nation.

Magombo said: “Agriculture can help to develop the industry sector which is key to Malawi 2063, but only if we adopt recommended farming technologies and improved seeds which are reliable, produce high yields, and persistent to diseases and climate changes.”

She said the field day demonstrated that recommended methods of farming and improved variety of seeds can help address the changing climate as well as soil degradation.

“Many methods of agriculture used in demonstration fields are the recommended methods of mtaya khasu which improves soil nutrients and the use of improved variety of seeds is the answer to the changing climate and depleted soil nutrients,” said Magombo.

Mchinji District Council vice-chairperson Henry Nyamaulo urged farmers to follow the farming methods and seeds used in the demonstration.

He said the use of crops which are resistance to diseases that require less fertiliser and endure the effects of climate change can help to improve food security.

During the field day, farmers demonstrated how the use of modern methods of farming and improved seeds are helping them to produce more yields.
