Participate in council by-elections—MEC

The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has urged the electorate in Zgeba Ward, Karonga to take part in the October 7 by-elections, saying councillors are crucial when initiating development projects.

Speaking at a meeting for the electorate held on Monday at Chihepusha in the ward, MEC commissioner Reverand Mezuwa Banda said  councillors live in their respective communities, as such they know what projects would benefit the people.

“When it comes to development, the electorate should focus on councillors and not a member of Parliament [MP] because they [councillors] have the mandate to demand development from district councils,” said Banda.

He decried the absence of councillors in the country for the past 10 years, noting that the scenario led to the electorate believing that initiating development projects is an MP’s role.

Banda, therefore, advised the electorate to vote for a development-conscious councillor.

Traditional Authority (T/A) Mwilang’ombe concurred with Banda, saying they have had problems when pushing for development in his area, largely because they do not have a councillor to represent them at district council level.
