If I were

Paul Maulidi

Secretary General of the ruling People’s Party (PP), I would appreciate that the reaction I gave to the effect that the party will not feel its former vice-president Cassim Chiumpha’s resignation because he was lazy, was far from convincing.

Whatever our differences are, I would appreciate that Chilumpha is a political heavyweight having served as the country’s vice-president for four years and having been in active politics for almost 20 years and you cannot wish him away just like that.

How I wish I were the PP SG because I would realise that if Chilumpha was indeed inactive, as SG, it was my responsibility to summon him and raise such issues, otherwise the public will view my reaction as crying over split milk.

If only I were one Paul Maulidi, I would realise that one does not need to be a political expert to realise that Chilumpha was an integral part of the party and more important than other hand clappers and bootlickers within the party.

Other than downplay Chilumpha, I would make an effort to investigate reports that he resigned having been frustrated by the party’s actions to throw its weight behind Justice Minister Fahad Assani as the party’s prospective candidate for Nkhotakota South and see how best such situations can be handled in future.

I would also realise that this is proof that PP is failing to handle internal conflicts.

That is if I were the PP SG, unfortunately I am not Paul am I? Happy new year Paul!
