People in Zomba, Phalombe districts ring hunger alarm

People from Zomba Malosa and Phalombe South constituencies have asked their legislators to press government to supply them with food amid hunger concerns.

They made the call during separate engagements between the constituents and their lawmakers that the Centre for Social Accountability and Transparency (Csat) organised.

Speaking during the meeting on Saturday in Songani, Zomba Malosa legislator Grace Kwelepeta (Democratic Progressive Party-DPP) said natural disasters affected food production.

Kwelepeta: I will take their
concerns to Parliament

“The constituents want Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (Admarc) to start selling maize. The people have also asked government to supply them with relief food.

“I will take their concerns to Parliament because the situation is critical.”

Among the listed demands, the constituents also asked for National Economic Empowerment Fund loans and completion of Domasi Community Hospital which Kwelepeta said needs K10 billion.

At Traditional Authority Mkhumba in Phalombe South Constituency, some people said they were surviving on maize husks.

The legislator Mary Mpanga (DPP) said she took their concerns seriously and would deliver them to the National Assembly which is in session.

Csat citizen engagement manager Moffat Phiri said the engagements are critical as they offer a platform for legislators to take to the National Assembly what their constituents want.

The engagements are part of the Parliamentary Support Programme that Csat is implementing with funding from the United States Agency for International Development and Democracy International.
