People’s Transformation Party (Petra) says it will empower women, the youth and civil servants if voted into power in 2014.

Addressing a rally at Nsondole Primary School in Zomba on Saturday, Petra president Kamuzu Chibambo said his party will introduce mobile polytechnics for the youth, set up agro-processing factories in all districts to benefit women and establish a housing programme for civil servants, among others.

“We shall introduce mobile polytechnics where the youth will acquire vocational skills. After graduating, we shall give the youth tool boxes on loan. We do not want our youths to spend time drinking and smoking. The youth from this area should be involved in projects taking place in this area,” said Chibambo, adding that secondary school curriculum would also include entrepreneurship.

He said his party will also help women form cooperatives and find markets for their produce.

On civil servants, Chibambo said Petra will establish a housing programme which will enable civil servants to own property.

“It is not good that after working for say 30 years in government, one retires and goes back to a rented house. We have a programme for one house for each civil servant,” he said.

Petra district governor for Nsondole Abwenzi Musolini told the meeting that the current Farm Input Subsidy Programme is not benefiting villagers; hence, the need to phase it out.
