Plan Malawi has moved in to support Early Childhood Development (ECD) initiatives in Kasungu at the time many organisations are shunning ECD programmes in the district.

Plan Malawi has assisted several ECD caregivers with training, learning materials and has also built community based care centres (CBCCs).

Plan Malawi’s support follows an appeal for support from the District Social Welfare Office for assistance after noting dwindling support in the area.

Kasungu District social welfare assistant Mc Donald Lungu said ECD is being shunned by organisations which are opting to offer support in other areas.

Plan Malawi Kasungu planning area manager Christopher Katutu said his organisation has noted several challenges in the area of ECD; hence, they decided to assist to ensure that children develop very well.

He said: “We have built and painted child-friendly CBCCs, trained caregivers and also given the CBCCs chairs and tables so that the children should not sit on the floor.”

Katutu also said Plan Malawi alongside other organisations is discussing with government to work out an honoraria for caregivers.

On Friday, Plan Malawi International donated several items worth K13 million to different clubs and CBCCs. The items included 140 push bikes, chairs and learning materials for primary schools. n
