Once again, Mighty Wanderers held peaceful elections at their clubhouse in Chichiri, Blantyre yesterday, with the race for general secretary creating a lot of hype before Mike Butao carried the day.

As expected, George Chamangwana retained his position as chairperson unopposed, so too his two deputies Alex Machira and Allan Chuma. Treasurer Christopher Mada Kuyera and vice-GS Chris Kananji were also ushered in unopposed.

Butao beat his competitor, Hubert Mfune, who was vice-GS in the previous committee with 135 votes against 105. It was players’ votes that made the difference in Butao’s favour.

Mfune attributed his loss to internal politics.

“But for the good of the team, I will not say much. The electorate has spoken and I wish the new committee all the best, they are assured of my support,” he said.

The contest for vice-treasurer also created controversy as Richard Kambalame was unopposed, but as per the norm, when electoral college secretary Henry Chibowa asked the electorate whether he, too, should be ushered in unopposed, there were mixed reactions.

Upon consultation with other electoral body members, trustees and FAM, Chibowa announced it had been deffered.

“A decision will be made by the electoral college in consultation with the newly elected executive and the players,” said Chibowa.

Patrick Tsonga, OnaniChaponda, ChuluNkangama, Wisdom Malunga and Eric Nkhoma were elected executive committee members.

The club’s board of trustees vice-chairperson James Chuma described the elections as free and fair.

He asked the Nomads family to support the new committee in order to turn the fortunes around.

“As for you the executive, you need to work as a team in order to restore the team’s lost glory,” said Chuma.

In his acceptance speech, Chamangwana said his immediate challenge is to bring back sanity by curbing violence which has dented the team’s image.
