Police arrest 8 for illegal possession of firearm

Police in Lilongwe have arrested eight people for possessing a BXP rifle and 19 rounds of ammunition without a permit contrary to Sections 16 of the Firearms Act and Section 2 of the same law.

Central Region Police spokesperson Ramsey Mushani confirmed the arrest yesterday, saying the eight will answer the charge of being found in possession of prohibited weapons—firearms and ammunition.

He said: “The suspects were planning to steal in Dedza using the same rifle, but police working undercover foiled their move and  arrested them. Police also recovered the rifle together with 19 live ammunition.”

Mushani identified the suspects as Saidi Rashid (30) from Kalakazombe Village, Traditional Authority (T/A) Kalonga in Salima; Imran Kasabola Bondomali (31) of  Kamwendo Village, T/A Bibi Kuluunda in Salima; Ali Rodrick Zakeyo (28) from Yesaya Village, T/A Mavwere in Mchinji.

Others are Mayamiko Wiseman (25) of Kabinda Village, T/A Kachere in Dedza and Jafali Mussa (28) of Mlanda Village, T/A Kambwiri in Salima were arrested in Falls Estate in Lilongwe on May 1 2016.

Mushani said the other three were arrested following confession of the five that the gun was borrowed.

He said preliminary investigations have since revealed that three of the suspects are on court bail while others are connected to a case of robbery with violence in Lilongwe.
