Police in Lilongwe have arrested Amos Katengeza, 27, on suspicion that he played a role in the murder of his cousin and former Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) employee Agnes Katengeza on September 24 2023.

Her body was found bundled in the trunk of her abandoned KIA Sportage in Area 47 residential area after she was reported missing on September 23 2024.

In a telephone interview yesterday, National Police spokesperson Peter Kalaya said Amos, a cousin of the deceased, has since been remanded to Maula Prison in Lilongwe after he appeared in court where he was charged with murder.

He said police arrested Amos following investigations which revealed that the suspect may have been involved in Agnes’ murder after being promised to receive K3 million as a reward.

Said Kalaya: “Amos Katengeza was arrested following an investigation which our detectives have been doing. We also recovered all the items which were taken from the deceased on the day of her murder such as an HP laptop and i-Phone 13 smartphone.”

He said the suspect will remain on remand until police complete their investigations within 60 days.

Kalaya refused to comment on the status of a Nigerian woman who was earlier picked on suspicion that she masterminded Agnes’ murder, saying the only suspect the police have arrested is Amos.

Commenting on the matter in a separate interview, security expert Aubrey Kabisala commended the police, saying the arrest gives confidence to the nation and citizens that despite the challenges police face in investigating crimes, they can still excel in intelligence gathering.

The suspect comes from Kachitsa Village, Traditional Authority Chiwere in Dowa District. According to a police statement, the suspect was living with the deceased in Lilongwe.

Agnes’ murder occurred barely three days after the body of Alan Wittika, who worked for Coca- Cola Beverages Company (Malawi), was found dumped in his Isuzu super-cab pickup close to his house in Area 15, Lilongwe. n
