South-West Region Police have asked the public to be cautious during the Easter holiday weekend by taking steps that will protect them and their property.

Police said during this period, Christians will be conducting religious activities while others would grab the opportunity to travel to various places for holidays.

South-West Region Police spokesperson Beatrice Mikuwa said in a statement issued yesterday that accidents during this period are inevitable due to excitement and carelessness by some motorists who go on the roads drunk, posing danger to other road users.

She said:“We are, therefore, assuring all citizens that police will seriously enforce all traffic regulations to protect lives and provide maximum security during this period when robbers also take advantage to rob houses when owners are away.

Mikuwa: Security starts with oneself

“There is an increased police visibility patrolling in all areas on foot and vehicle, day and night to make sure all places are safe.”

Mikuwa said police are also reminding the public that security starts with one self, as such, people should take the lead to safeguard their life and property.

She said: “When going out for various religious activities or holidays, they should make sure they leave someone mature enough at home to take care of the home.

“People should not be excited with social media announcing their movements and whereabouts because this alerts and attracts robbers.”

Mikuwa said people must drive roadworthy vehicles along to avoid road accidents. People should also report to police about any suspicious people or activities within their society.

She further said police also have zone vehicles stationed in all locations ready to rapidly respond to any call or report from particular locations.

“We have surveillance cameras in Limbe streets and we will soon have them in Blantyre,” Mikuwa said.

During Easter, Christians celebrate the completion of the Holy Week that ends with the resurrection of Jesus Christ. The occasion also celebrates the beginning and foundation of Christianity.

Jesus was raised from the dead, and it goes to show that He conquered sin and death.
