Hooliganism and violence will be among items on the agenda of a two-day Public Order Management Conference which Malawi Police Service (MPS) is hosting in Lilongwe from today.

Themed Keeping People Safe, the conference is expected to complement the ongoing Policing Improvement Programme being implemented with financial assistance from UK’s Department for International Development.

The reform aims at building MPS’ capacity in managing public order in a way that recognises and respects people’s rights.

Participants to the conference include the media, civil society and medical professionals.

MPS assistant commissioner and deputy head of research and planning Kelvin Mulezo confirmed in an interviewon Monday about the workshop.

“It is expected that football hooliganism will be discussed and we are very much aware that it is an important part of public order policing in modern Malawi. To this effect, selected football officials have been invited both at FAM and club level,” he said.

National stewards coordinator Pascal Nkuta recently complained about lack of training in crowd control as they last underwent training in 2001.

Malawi football is reeling from worsening hooliganism and violence that led to the death of Mighty Wanderers fan Lemiyasi Josita on December 28 2013 during an aborted TNM Super League meeting with Silver Strikers.
