Police in Lilongwe have arrested three people who were found in possession of two pistols, one with four bullets and the other without magazine.

Two of the suspects, 41-year-old Andrew Nyirongo and his accomplice, 32-year-old Bernard Kumisuku, were apprehended by Kanengo Police while the other suspect, Bertha Ali, was arrested by Lilongwe police.

police-lineKanengo police spokesperson Esther Mkwanda said Nyirongo and Kumisuku, who were in possession of a pistol and four bullets, are suspected ‘notorious’ criminals who have been at large.

Said Mkwanda: “There are reports that the two have allegedly been terrorising the city. They are answering charges of robbery with violence and illegal possession of firearms contrary to Section 301 of the Penal Code.”

Nyirongo stays in Chinsapo, but hails from Kacheche Village in the area of Traditional Authority (T/A) Lukwa in Kasungu and Kumisuku, who currently lives in Area 25, comes from Sambe Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kapeni in Blantyre.

According to Lilongwe Police spokesperson Kingsley Dandaula the other suspect, Ali, who comes from Traditional Authority T/A Chimwala in Mangochi, was arrested after a search in her home by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) produced the second pistol.

Said Dandaula: “The weapon is suspected to belong to James Ali, a convict who is already serving a 10-year sentence for theft.”

He said police are still looking for the convict’s friend who is still at large.

All three suspects will appear in court soon.
