People of Mulunguzi, Suya-Chirimba and Mbwelera in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kuntaja, Blantyre have been assured of security of their lives and property following the opening of Mulunguzi Police Unit on Friday.

Then minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security Paul Chibingu [now Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development], who was the guest of honour at the ceremony, assured residents in the area that the opening of the unit, which is under Chilomoni Police Station, was meant to strengthen security in the area.

Besides warning thugs that they will be dealt with to the letter, Chibingu also cautioned corrupt police officers that they would equally face the law.

He said he was disappointed by frequent reports of police officers being involved in crimes.

“So if you [officer] know that you have been doing this, then your time is gone. Just be a Born Again; otherwise, we will arrest you,” he said.

Chibingu said this following reports of growing numbers of police officers involved in crimes, the latest being the arrest last week of 10 police officers in Salima for alleged theft of public property.

Construction of the police unit started in 2005 with support from the community and its member of Parliament Tarsizio Gowelo, who also witnessed the opening.
