Police to continue checking CoF—Road Traffic

The Directorate of Road Traffic and Safety Services (DRTSS) has warned that traffic police officers will continue to impound vehicles that are not roadworthy.

The warning comes in the wake of problems that the directorate has been facing in the past week due to an upgrade at the Malawi Traffic Information System (Maltis) which resulted into delays and problems in issuing out of road traffic documents such as certificate of fitness (CoF) discs and vehicle registration.

policeThe development resulted in miscommunication, prompting some traffic police officers to stop checking such vehicle documents such as CoF.

But DRTSS public relations officer Chisomo Chibwana said in a statement that police will continue checking all road traffic documents as usual.

“There will be no change on the part of the traffic police officers regarding checking the vehicles’ road documents. DRTSS is calling on all motorists to make sure that their vehicles are roadworthy,” said Chibwana.

She clarified that due to the technical work that has been going on, the directorate was issuing documents that the police might not have been familiar with.

“The DRTSS has informed the traffic police of this development in order for them not to penalise any road user who is in possession of these current documents because they are documents that are valid,” said Chibwana.
