Police in Karonga have urged communities  to desist from  violence against female candidates.

Speaking during an awareness campaign on prevention of violence against women in Traditional Authority Wasambo on Monday, Northern Region Commissioner of Police Hannings Mlotha said anyone found violating women’s rights will be prosecuted.

Mlotha: Let women campaign freely

He said there have been reports of female aspirants being threatened and assaulted during campaign.

“We want women, just like men, to campaign freely. Everyone has the right to conduct a campaign rally and we discourage any form of violence,” said Mlotha

The commissioner urged women to report cases of violence or abuse during their campaign.

Uliwa Ward independent candidate Gloria Singini said the awareness campaign has come at a right time when female candidates are being denied venues and facing threats from their male counterparts in Karonga South Constituency.

Karonga district commissioner Emmanuel Bulukutu asked the women to report to the district council when they are abused, attacked or harassed during their campaign. n
