Mzuzu University (Mzuni) has said postgraduate studies play a vital role in the development of a nation.

Speaking on Wednesday at a symposium for the university’s postgraduate students, Mzuni vice-chancellor Robert Ridley said research conducted by students during postgraduate studies are “the engine for generating knowledge that can contribute to the growth of a country’s economy”.

“Developing countries do a lot of research; hence, there is need for expansion of postgraduate studies. We have a lot of Malawians doing research in universities in other countries. We need more of them here [in Malawi] to develop our country,” he said.

In his address, students’ representative Komani Tembo asked employers to offer them job opportunities so that they, in turn, contribute towards transforming the nation.

“In most cases, postgraduates are viewed as a threat to authority in organisations, but our plea is that they should give us a chance to work,” said Tembo.

The theme for the symposium was ‘Embracing and Appreciating Postgraduate Skills in the Dynamic World of Work’.

Founded in 1997, Mzuni currently offers postgraduate studies in library and information science; information theory, coding and cryptography; arts (theology); fisheries and transformative community development, among other courses.
