Malawi Prison Services have promised to offer quality education as one way of reforming inmates in all prisons nationwide.

Prison deputy director for education Mike Njolomole said this recently in Zomba during celebration of two inmates who were selected to University of Malawi (Unima) and Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (Luanar) during last year’s university entrance examination.

The former inmates started their studies this year.

“Education is one of the instruments we use in prisons to reform inmates because we know that it will help them when they get out. The knowledge and skills they acquire will also benefit their communities.

“We are happy that the majority of inmates take education seriously, no wonder some of them are making it to universities. We promise to improve our education standards,” said Njolomole.

Despite the success, prison education faces many challenges such as lack of learning and teaching materials.

These include chalk, dusters, exercise books, text books, pens, mathematical instruments and scientific calculators.

As such, Njolomole appealed for help from the general public.
