Malawi Institute of Procurement and Supply (Mips) and the Anti- Corruption Bureau (ACB) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will see the institute sharing information to facilitate corruption investigations.

Speaking at the signing in Lilongwe yesterday, ACB director general Martha Chizuma described the MoU as relevant to the bureau’s work because over 70 percent of corruption cases it investigates are procurement related.

Chizuma: The MoU is critical for ACB

She said if well managed, the relationship can help end corruption and save the country’s resources.

“For starters, 70 percent of funds in the national budget goes into procurement and then 70 percent of cases at the ACB are procurement related. This MoU, therefore, is very critical in curbing corruption in the procurement sector. We will be able to save a great deal of national funds,” Chizuma said.

Mips chief executive officer Feston Kaupa said they are excited to work with the ACB on this initiative.

He said the fact that most corruption cases under the ACB scope come from the procurement sector should not discourage, but rather motivate the institute to join hands in curbing the vice.

“We feel challenged that we have a contribution to make. I believe that we will be measured by how much we have contributed to curbing corruption in the country,” Kaupa said.

He said the ACB will in that way, be obliged to share with Mips information which will in turn be shared with its membership to help prevent corruption.
