South Africa’s celebrated house singer, Professor, will not be performing at the forthcoming Sunbird Sand Music Festival as previously announced according to local online publication Nyasa Showbiz.

The artist was supposed to be one of the international headliners at the music festival scheduled for next weekend, from 29 to 31 August, at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach in Salima.

Sand Music Festival project director, Lucius Banda, told the publication in Salima on Wednesday that they had decided to cancel their performance deal with Professor because of his busy schedule.

Said Lucius: “He [Professor] has two shows in South Africa the same weekend he’s supposed to perform here, one on Friday and one on Sunday”.

He added: “We had booked him for Saturday and we feel with such a busy schedule, he might end up not showing up, anything can happen, so we have decided to take him off the list because we don’t want to end up disappointing our patrons.”

This means the 2014 Sand Music Festival will have no South African artist as Professor was the only musician representing SA.

From outside Malawi, the festival will hence be dominated by Zambian musicians, who include Danny K of the Yakumbuyo fame, Organized Family and B1. Zimbabwe will be represented by urban grooves sensational Nikki.

Sunbird Sand Music Festival has engaged three international artists and these are Nikki from Zimbabwe, B1 from Zambia, and Professor from Republic of South Africa. We realize that there has been a trend by South African artists that they have not been showing up partly because Agents were involved but also the lack of attention to detail on both sides, we have learnt from our mistakes and those of others and have put in place procedures that will not take us back.

The artists are billed to headline this year’s Sand Music Festival slated for August 29-31 in the lakeshore district of Salima.
