The Protea Ryalls Golf Tournament, scheduled for Lilongwe Golf Club (LGC) on Saturday, has registered a field of 152 golfers.

Both the hotel and LGC management confirmed the development in separate interviews.

Protea Ryalls sales executive Florentine Kabefu described the response as overwhelming.

“After reaching the target, we had to close registration.  The response has been overwhelming and we don’t take this for granted.  We apologise to those that we could not take in,” she said.

LGC marketing manager Juliet Masonjo said her office has been overwhelmed with applications.

“But we had to close after Protea Ryalls Hotel said they only wanted 152 golfers,” she said.

Kabefu said they have decided to take the tournament to Lilongwe to interact with their customers, most of who play golf.

“Through this tournament, we will be providing our customers with an opportunity to participate in the sport they love. At the same time we will be engaging  various companies, updating them on our services and also getting feedback, “ she said.

According to Kabefu, as a token appreciation for a successful financial year, Protea Ryalls Hotel has pledged one night free accommodation for two to all the 152 golfers.

Victor Kachepatsonga who won the past two events of the tournament, said he is geared to defend it again.

“It will be tough, but  I can do it,” he said.  n
