PSI yesterday donated 350 balls worth about K5 million towards youth football development.

The gesture took place at Chiwembe Technical Centre in Limbe as the Under-20 FMB regional leagues are about to enter the second week of the season.

PSI director of malaria and child survival programmes Charles Yuma said the donation was part of the ‘United against Malaria’ campaign which has also attracted global superstar footballers such as Lionel Messi and Didier Drogba.

On the domestic scene, Flames midfield maestro Robert ‘Baggio’ Ng’ambi is the campaign ambassador.

“We are involved in malaria control campaigns as one of our major programmes. PSI is also involved in the distribution of mosquito nets as part of the campaign,” said Yuma.

He also said they appreciate efforts being made by National Youth Football Committee (NYFC) and Football Association of Malawi (FAM) to develop football at the grass roots, hence the donation.

NYFC general secretary Alfred Lungu thanked PSI for the timely donation and said each team in the Under-20 regional youth leagues will get two balls.

Lungu said his committee will prepare a report on the distribution of balls which will be sent to PSI and FAM.

FAM chief executive officer Suzgo Nyirenda described the donation as opportune because youth leagues were complaining against lack of equipment.
