Queens coach to name squad

Malawi Queens caretaker coach Griffin ‘Zagalo’ Saenda has revealed that he will name the final squad for the African Netball Championships in Tanzania just before departure for the continental showpiece slated for Dar es Salaam from May 8-12.

Usually, the Queens final squad is named at least three to four days before leaving for any international competition.

But Saenda, who has already trimmed the camping squad from 22 players to 15, said on Wednesday that he would name a final 12-player squad at noon on Saturday because of the short period he has been with the girls in camp.

The girls were supposed to be in camp for at least four weeks, but the period was reduced to two weeks due to Sports Council’s ban on sporting activities in respect for the 30-day mourning period for the late president Bingu wa Mutharika.

“I want to have enough time to assess the players before leaving for Tanzania this Sunday. So I will name the travelling players at noon this Saturday,” he said.

The 15-member squad that is camping at Superior Hotel in Blantyre and having training sessions at Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) is as follows: Shooters: Joyce Mvula, Jessie Mazengera, Jenny Chimaliro and Sindi Simutowe; Attackers: Thandi Galeta, Tina Kamzati, Beatrice Kadango, Bridget Kumwenda and Ella Kameza; Defenders: Caroline Mtukule-Ngwira, Towera Vinkhumbo, Grace Mwafulirwa-Mhango, Joana Kachilika, Lauren Ngwira and Beauty Chirwa.
