Malawi Queens arrive through Lilongwe today from the 2014 Glasgow XX Commonwealth Games in Scotland where they retained their number one position in Africa.

A hearty welcome is expected to be given to the world’s fifth-positioned Queens, who posted four wins, including over rivals South Africa, and two losses.

The Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) general secretary Carol Bapu yesterday said a final picture of the welcoming activities would be known later.

“But government and sponsors Airtel are ready to welcome them alongside the entire netball fraternity. We thank Airtel for the performance as we were able to go in camp early because of their sponsorship,” explained Bapu.

Australia beat New Zealand to win the netball championship on Sunday. Overall, there was no adding to the three medals that Malawi has registered in the history of the quadriannual games.

Malawi team comprised cyclists, boxers, runners and swimmers who were mere kingmakers.

Meanwhile, Minister of Sports Grace Chiumia says her trip to Scotland where she had talks with several government ministers was successful.

She said she negotiated a pact with her counterparts where Malawi will be sending coaches, athletes in different sports disciplines for training among other things.

“As government, we plan to launch an Athletes Identification Development plan to enhance sports competitions from the nursery schools, primary schools, secondary schools,” said Chiumia.
