Rains continue to cause damage to people’s property with Zomba getting its own share after a storm blew off roofs of hundreds of houses in Matawale area on Wednesday.

The rains, which started around 3pm, were light, but with them came strong winds that aggravated the blowing off of the roofs.

During a visit to Matawale, The Nation found the area in a disorganised state as some houses had their roofs blown off, thereby making the rains soak properties such as sofa sets, mattresses television sets and decoders.

In an interview, one of the victims, Fatima Kaunda, whose house had its roof blown off, said she was inside her house when the accident happened.

In a telephone interview, Zomba Police Station spokesperson Patricia Sipiliano said police were yet to get a report on the incident. She said details would be available today.

This is not the first time rains have caused havoc in the country since early November. Parts of Blantyre, Mchinji, Mzimba and Nkhotakota districts, among others, have been affected by rainstorms. n
