Reaping fruits of Theater Konstanz tour

In an unexpected offshoot of the Nanzikambe Arts Crossing Borders Partnership with Konstanz Theatre, Germany, members of Soroptomist International Women’s Organisations in Germany have partnered with same-minded Malawian counterparts.

The partnership came to the fore  on Thursday when Konstanz lead  actor Thomas Spieckermann presented 400 euros from soroptomist Sabine Bilharz to Jean Chilemba, a representative of the Blantyre chapter of the sister-to-sister group.

Bilharz, a prominent member of the German theatre group and Soroptomist Club in Konstanz, toured the country last year when the drama group staged Reinventing Parcival.

“Her contribution will benefit the women and girls at Chichiri Prison in Blantyre. Apart from cheering them from time to time, we give them soap and other sanitation material,” said Chilemba.

Soroptomist International is a global network of clubs run by women for women.

Both Nanzikambe and the local Soroptomist Club Blantyre have projects for women inmates at Chichiri.

Nanzikambe Arts is running a weekly Community Arts Club workshops as part of the new Act Now Network project while the Soroptomists visit the female inmates with gifts and supplies.

“The money will further this partnership in the female section and assist the women and children living there,” said Nanzikambe’s founding member Effie Makepeace.
