Robert Ng’ambi restricted in Flames
Robert Ng’ambi scored again for Platinum Stars on Saturday in a South Africa Premiership game, rendering credence to a theory that the midfielder hardly reproduces his form in the Flames because he is restricted.
Reports from South Africa indicate that Ng’ambi scored one of the Stars’ goals as they beat Polokwane City 2-1. Veteran striker Esau Kanyenda played for the losing rookies.
In an interview after the game, South Africa-based Malawian sports journalist Benjamin Nyirenda attributed Ng’ambi’s form to proper club positioning. Ng’ambi was also on target in the one-one draw with Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday.
“They [Flames] should give him the freedom to play from defence to attack. They should not restrict him. When he plays freely, he creates chances and scores. Now he has scored twice in two games,” said the Soccer Laduma football magazine reporter.
On Wednesday, Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane also seemed to agree with Nyirenda, telling SuperSport television: “This is our boggy team, you never know how they score, suddenly it is Ng’ambi coming from nowhere scoring. It is always him.”
Ng’ambi did not reply when asked why he does not fully transfer club form to country. Ng’ambi scored in the 2-2 draw with Kenya in a World Cup qualifier in June. But in South Africa, he scores more often, leading to his nomination as player of the year contender last season.
At club level, winger Peter Wadabwa also performs more with Golden Arrows who lost 1-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns.
On Saturday, Wadabwa said he was hoping for the best under coach Tom Saintfiet “as for me, it is just about time. I just want to settle in the starting 11 then I make a difference.”
