Rumphi hospital high dependency unit ready March

Deputy Minister of Health Enock Phale says construction of a high dependency unit at Rumphi District Hospital is expected to be completed by March 2023.

He said this when he visited the district hospital on Monday. 

Phale said once completed, the facility is expected to enhance provision of quality healthcare at the hospital.

“A high dependency unit is crucial in district referral hospitals as they assist to provide high dependency services required by some patients,” he said.

Phale also commended healthcare workers in the district for handling the cholera outbreak effectively.

He pledged his ministry’s commitment to provide a conducive environment for healthcare workers in the country.

“When I visited the facility last year, I learnt that you had no X-ray and washing machines, among others. I am now excited that the ministry has provided the hospital with the X-ray and washing machines,” said Phale.

Rumphi district director of health and social services Wester Nyirenda said he was pleased that the ministry had fulfilled a number of the pledges it committed to the hospital last year.

He also commended government for supporting the hospital to buy drugs after sounding an alarm that the district’s drug budget would be depleted before the end of the of the 2022/23 financial year.

“However, I ask government to renovate the hospital which is in dilapidated state,” said Nyirenda.
