SA-based players struggle to score

Out of the seven Malawian players in the South African top-flight league, only midfielder Robert Ng’ambi got on the scoresheet going into the festive season break.

Ng’ambi, who plays for Platinum Stars, scored two goals, five short of leading scorer—Mpumalanga Black Aces’ veteran Zambian forward Collins Mbesuma.

Strikers Frank ‘Gabadinho’ Mhango (Bloemfontein Celtic), Esau Kanyenda (Polokwane City), Atusaye Nyondo (University of Pretoria) and Robin Ngalande (Platinum), midfilder Micium Mhone (Jomo Cosmos) and defender Limbikani Mzava (Aces), are yet to find the back of the net.

In contrast, at the same stage last season, most of them had scored more than twice each.

Ironically, except for Ng’ambi, Mzava and Nyondo the rest have made sporadic appearances for their clubs.

“After recovering from a groin injury, I had struggles to break into the team, but I am picking up now and I am hopeful of coming back with a bang next year,” said Gabadinho who is in the country for the festive season holiday.

Winger Gerald Phiri Jnr, who signed for Bifvest Wits in July this year, is yet to start playing at competitive level as he awaits his permanent residence permit.

“Hopefully, my permit should be ready early next year, otherwise I can’t wait to bounce back,” said Phiri. n
