Saenda to beef up Queens defence

Coach Griffin Saenda is scouting for a towering defender to beef up the Malawi Queens backline which struggled in the final of the Diamond Challenge championship in South Africa.

Malawi, which beat South Africa then lost in the rematch, finished second to eventual winners and the hosts Spar Proteas in the four-nation event held in Pretoria.

Saenda attributed the loss in the reverse match to Malawi defence’s failure to match South Africa’s towering shooters.

“There is need for one tall player in defence, taller than Mwawi Kumwenda. Our defenders were excellent, save for the factor of height which is not their problem. Once we beef up the defence and the centre, then we will have the toughest team,” Saenda explained.

At the end of the tournament, Mwawi scooped the Top Scorer Award whereas his scoring partner Sindi Simtowe came second. The tournament also attracted Botswana and Zambia.
