Has announced his retirement: Sakala

Henry Sakala, who is currently president of the Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) which was suspended by International Boxing Association (Aiba) for some irregularities, has announced his retirement from boxing.
Sakala has, however, expressed commitment to meet Aiba demands, including holding fresh elections and overhauling set-ups of the sport’s referees and judges in the country. But he has insisted that he will not seek re-election.
In an interview on Wednesday, Sakala said it was unfortunate that people thought he was clinging to Maba.
Maba was suspended because most of its executive members were involved in running professional fights.
“The reason I am still at Maba is that I want to negotiate a smooth transition of power, such as handing over of assets and everything else to the new committee,” said Sakala.
He said he is currently talking to Sports Council to release part of Maba’s subvention for organising the elections.
Aiba also demands that Maba should train its judges and referees and not use those that were involved in professional boxing.
Denmark and Norway were also suspended earlier in 2014 for the same reasons, but Norway’s suspension has just been lifted.
