Salima District Council chairperson Chifungo Katoweka has pledged to continue working with other stakeholders to implement different development projects in the district.

He said this in his acceptance speech on Wednesday after retaining his seat during council elections for new office-bearers.

Katoweka said: “I will continue working with my fellow councillors and the secretariat to implement projects.

“During our just-ended term, we initiated different projects that have succeeded. Salima has emerged number two in the local government performance assessment.”

He also pledged to uphold transparency and accountability to ensure the district achieves its development goals.

On his part, Salima district commissioner Eric Kenamu pledged to work with the new office-bearers.

He said they will work towards revamping the council’s service committees.

“I am happy that the elections have been successful and now our expectation as a council is that the office-bearers will help us in revenue collection activities for smooth implementation of different projects,” said Kenamu.

In random interviews, residents welcomed the new office-bearers, but cautioned them against laxity.

A resident, Dalitso Gome, said the new office-bearers should continue working hard to develop the district.

“This is a district with the potential to develop because it is a tourism destination. We need good roads and recreation centres to attract tourists,” he said.

During the elections, councillor Alena Pelete was elected vice-chairperson for the 2023/24 financial year
