School labs crucial for learning, says minister
Minister of Education Madalitso Kambauwa Wirima says information and communications technology (ICT) skills are crucial to facilitating national development.
She said this on Tuesday during a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of a computer laboratory at Chamama Community Day Secondary School (CDSS) in Senior Chief Wimbe in Kasungu District.
The minister said the adoption of ICT skills must start at an early stage; hence, the construction of computer suits in schools, including those in rural areas.
Said Wirima: “We expect improved performance because the Internet is a source of academic material.
“This is also going all the way to the community as they will also benefit from the Internet connectivity.”
The laboratory, which will have 60 computers and provide free Internet, is part of the Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra) initiative.
Macra head of Universal Service Fund Ronald Tembo said they have lined up several projects to digitalise and connect the country.
He said: “In the education sector, we are running a number of projects, including the one we are launching today.
“In the first phase of the Connect a School Project, we are constructing 75 laboratories nationwide.”
Tembo said the community will access free Internet for three years, adding that the laboratory will provide free Internet within a radius of 100 metres.
Chamama CDSS head teacher Menard Kumwenda expressed excitement over the project, saying he was optimistic that it will increase enrolment.
“Often, when a school does not have sufficient learning materials, learners get demotivated and learning outcomes are relatively poor.
“Therefore, the computer laboratory will motivate learners to work hard.”
