Scottish teacher gets ‘special’ salute

Josephine Breton, a Scottish volunteer teacher at a private primary school in Lilongwe, has earned special praise for being a hard worker and exhibiting a humble and sacrificial Christian life.

Breton, 63, a master’s degree holder, received the praise during a farewell dinner on Saturday after her two-year term as a primary school teacher at M’buka Private Primary School in Lilongwe’s Area 36 owned by Nkhoma Synod Church of Central Africa Presbyterian (CCAP).

She returns to Scotland today after being a pioneer missionary teacher in a twinning relationship between M’buka CCAP and St. Kane’s Presbyterian Church of Scotland in Aberdeen. The two churches were twinned on November 23 2011.

In his speech at the dinner, M’buka Private Primary School board member Johns Mauluka lamented that the expatriate teacher’s departure would create a void at the school.

He said: “In Madame Breton, we have lost an outstanding hard worker who responded to the headmaster’s instructions without questioning. She sacrificed her comfort back home, only to make do with less comfortable accommodation within Area 36 Township.

“Because she has a passion for education, Madame Breton mobilised Scottish friends and relatives who have greatly improved educational standards by providing cash and educational items to this school, which will see the school opening a fully-fledged computer laboratory soon.”

Mauluka commended her for transforming the school by, among other things, introducing a music lesson, providing school text books and other educational supplies and promoting discipline and unity among teachers.

In his remarks, M’buka CCAP pastor-in-charge the Reverend David Zembeni said Breton’s lifestyle was based on her strong Christian conviction, as proved by her active participation in church activities.

During her stay, Breton was given a local name, Nabanda, owing to her humility and close association with the community, according to Zembeni. n
