Shonga, Araujo win TNM Mpamba Golf

James Shonga and Annes Araujo emerged winners of the TNM Mpamba Golf Tournament at Blantyre Sports Club (BSC) on Kamuzu Day.

Playing off handicap 10, Shonga registered 61 net to earn himself a K48 000 Mpamba shopping voucher and a trophy while 25 handicapped Araujo had 72 net. She got a K30 000 shopping voucher and a trophy.

Shonga attributed his triumph to his brilliant display on hole 13, saying: “It is par five, but I got three and I felt that made the difference.”

He also paid special tribute to his playing partner Paul Chidale for tips which helped him to excel.

Twenty handicap Yohane Mzuza was Shonga’s runner-up with a net of 68 while Beatrice Mangwana, playing off 26 handicapp, was the runner-up in the ladies category with 76 net. She counted out Stella Hara.

Three handicap Paul Chidale finished third on 69 net after counting out 17 handicap John Suzi Banda.

In subsidiary prizes, Edwin Chipala had the longest drive on hole 17 while Suzi-Banda was nearest to the pin on hole 12. They all received Mpamba shopping vouchers.

TNM head of Blantyre region David Nyirenda said they organised the tournament to allow golfers to experience Mpamba.

TNM head of mobile money Webster Mbekeani said: “This is one of the best activations we have had. It is the most overwhelming support that we have had.”

BSC golf captain Hudson Kantwanje thanked TNM Mpamba section for accepting to organise a full tournament instead of a ball pool.

“Let me also thank the organising committee for a job well-done as well as the participants,” said Kantwanje.

TNM donated K100 000 towards the maintenance of the greens.
