According to Ntcheu Police publicist Gift Matewere, the Toyota coaster registration BR 1040 carrying the Bankers, who were returning to their Lilongwe base after beating Mighty Be Forward Wanderers 2-0 during a TNM Super League match at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre, hit Chapeleka Bihale, 35, of Kamtengule Village in Traditional Authority (T/A) Kwataine in Ntcheu.

Matewere said Bihale sustained head injuries and died the following day at Ntcheu District Hospital.

“The accident occurred at around 7pm. Our preliminary investigations revealed that Bihale was drunk and he unexpectedly staggered into the road,” he said.

“At present, we cannot say the driver of the coaster was at fault. However, we are still investigating the matter.”

Silver Strikers team manager Francis Songo, who was in the vehicle when the accident happened, said no individual on board sustained any injury and they arrived home safely.

“When the accident occurred, I was asleep and I did not see what actually happened. However, I discovered that a man was hit by the bull bar as the driver tried to avoid him. In spite of that all our players and officials on board did not sustain any injury,” Songo said.

Last weekend, the Bankers were in the commercial city where apart from beating Wanderers, suffered a 0-1 defeat to Azam Tigers at Kalulu Stadium in Nchalo on Saturday.
