Silver in tight spot

Lack of an executive committee at Silver Strikers FC has halted the club’s operations, including preparations for the forthcoming 2019 season.

The three-year tenure of office of the team’s executive committee expired on January 31 and the club’s board of trustees is yet to appoint a new one.

Silver finished third in the 2018 season

Club outgoing general secretary Lawrence Yobe yesterday said their hands are tied as they cannot continue with the club’s operations in the absence of communication from the board of trustees.

“There has been no word from the board on the way forward and as it is, there is a power vacuum.

“There are crucial issues that need to be urgently looked into like preparations for the new season, signing of new players and reviewing the technical panel.

“It is like everything has come to a standstill,” he said.

One of the club’s trustees, McDonald Mafuta Mwale, who speaks for the board, could not be reached for comment, but he recently confirmed to The Nation about the expiry of the executive’s tenure of office.

“The constitution gives mandate to the board of trustees to constitute the executive committee every four years. We will, therefore, review the performance of the old executive committee and decide whether to renew their mandate or bring in new personnel,” he said.

The club’s supporters committee chairperson King Malaya said the supporters want the current leadership to continue.

“I was recently approached by a group of supporters who asked me to request the board to consider extending the chairperson Ralph Tseka’s tenure of office.

“The general feeling is that under his leadership, the players’ welfare has improved and we have assembled a good team. We might not have won any silverware last season, but the future is promising,” he said.

The Central Bankers finished third in the 2018 TNM Super League season behind champions Nyasa Big Bullets and runners-up Be Forward Wanderers.
