Silver Strikers management has closed its stadium effective this week. The move follows a project meant to upgrade the facility so that it is also used for other commercial activities.

The stadium is expected to be closed to all activities for six months.

The club’s general secretary Mike Tembo said the project has been undertaken to transform the facility.

“We are also constructing a lounge, a gym and other recreational facilities. We want Silver to be a complete stadium with amenities associated with a complete stadium. We have to make most use of the stadium to generate income for the running of the team,” he said.

Tembo said the project is part of the fulfilment of the Fifa 2009 Lilongwe Declaration in which Super League clubs signed.

He said they have since engaged a professional contractor to do the work, but Tembo could not reveal how much the project will cost upon completion.

“I do not have the actual figures for this project, but it is big budget as we aim to achieve financial success as a club,” he said.

Meanwhile, Tembo said they are yet to meet as a club to decide on a stadium they will use for home matches.

“We have to find a home ground. The options are either Civo Stadium or Nankhaka, but we are yet to discuss that as an executive and also approach management of the two stadiums,” he said.

Sliver Strikers General Secretary Mike Tembo said: “We can’t play in the current state because it is a hazard.”

Silver Strikers have said they will claim damages to their stadium during the Super League game between Epac and Big Bullets last Sunday.

Tembo said the damages are still being assessed, but warned that if the Super League governing body does not comply they will not allow other teams to use the stadium.

“If the claim will not be met then I am afraid we won’t allow other teams to use it as their home ground and we hope that for the fairness of things, they will act accordingly,” he said.
