Silver Strikers lethal striker Rodrick Gonani has said they are determined to win the K20 million (about $68 000) Standard Bank Knockout Trophy as a gift to the new Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) Governor Charles Chuka.

Gonani, who scored a brace in Sunday’s semi-final against Civo United to inspire a 4-1 victory, said Silver have a tradition of dedicating trophies to new governors.

The Bankers will meet Mighty Wanderers on Saturday in an all blue finals.

“Our focus is to grab the trophy and give it to the new governor as a gift. We at silver have a tradition of giving gifts to our governors, so we are targeting the Standard Bank Trophy for the new governor,” said Gonani.

He confessed that the battle will be tough against Wanderers.

“We will strive to achieve it. We know Wanderers are the best team, but with the form we have taken now, we will definitely win the trophy,” he said.

Chuka replaced Dr Perks Ligoya after the People’s Party (PP) took over government from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) in April.

Ligoya’s gift was the TNM Super League title last season.

Gonani, who is trailing Bullets striker Gabadinho Mhango with two goals on the Golden Boot Award race, said he still has a chance to dislodge Gabadinho. Gonani has three goals whereas Gabadinho has five.

“I still have a chance to win the race as we are still in the competition. I know it is going to be a tall order, but with focus and the help of my colleagues, I can manage to upset the tables,” he said.
