Southern Region Boxing Championships will for the first time be held at Chez Ntemba in Blantyre tomorrow.

All along, Blantyre Youth Centre (BYC) has been the traditional venue for the contest, but Southern Region Boxing Committee (SRBC) chairperson Bester Saopa said they have changed the venue so as to enable them collect more revenue at the gate.

Saopa said that the Malawi Boxing Association (Maba) has only given them K100 000 (about $334) to organise the contest; hence, they need a more secure venue to ensure more revenue collection for the championships.

“There is tight security at Chez Ntemba and there will be no cases of people jumping over the wall fence to avoid paying at the gates. That way, we are assured of getting 100 percent of gate revenue which would be used for administration and paying for other expenses during the event,” said Saopa.

He also asked well-wishers to assist them with additional funds or materials to make the regional contest, which will act as national qualifiers, a success.

Saopa has advised boxing clubs to intensify training for their amateur boxers so that they should offer entertaining boxing on Saturday.
