Southern Region Chess League (SRCL) will tomorrow (Saturday) conduct its qualifiers for the Africa Zone 4.3 Chess Championships which Malawi is expected to host in April 2015.

According to SRCL vice-chairperson Peter Jailosi, the day-long qualifiers will take place at Country Club Limbe (CCL) where the best five players will make it into the national qualifiers alongside seeded players.

“The games will start at 8.30am and registration fee is K2 000 per participant. The games will have seven rounds,” said Jailosi.

The Central Region Chess League (CRCL) and their Northern Region counterparts conducted their qualifiers few weeks ago.

After the national qualifiers, about 14 players will be identified and monitored before the country’s final seven-player squad is selected.

The Zone 4.3 Championship, which is contested by 14 southern Africa countries, including South Africa, Zambia and Angola, is second only to Africa Senior Championship in terms of prestige. The event, which Malawi will host is set to raise the country’s chess profile.
