South Lunzu CCAP Church Choir are this year’s champions of the Globe Christmas Carols Choir Competition following their outstanding performance at Serendib Hotel in Blantyre on Friday.

At least six choirs from around the commercial city took part in the K1.5 million annual contest meant to celebrate Christmas, but South Lunzu CCAP Church Choir stood above the rest with their messages about the birth of Jesus Christ, which were well-woven in energetic angelic voices.

It was no surprise, therefore, that all the three songs the choir, dressed in pink, sang seemed to immerse an enthusiastic audience of gospel lovers deep into the spiritual world and impressed the competition’s judges Allan Siyani, Gabriel Mofolo and Charity Chiundiza.

The winning choir’s chairperson Jacqueline Nzima, whose song For Unto Us received a round of applause, said they were happy with their achievement.

“Winning this competition is something that makes us proud during this Christmas season,” she said.

Chief judge Allan Siyani said to determine the winner, they looked at the messages in the songs to check if they were in sync with the Christmas period.

“We also looked at the coordination of the choir and their presentation. In the end, South Lunzu CCAP Church Choir had the most points in these aspects,” he said.

For their success, the winners got K150 000 while runners-up St Bernadette Catholic Choir of Bangwe Township walked away with K100 000. Nkolokoti CCAP Choir finished third and received K50 000.

Globe Internet Limited customer relations executive Dorothy Kachitsa, whose company has been bankrolling the event alongside Globe Computer Systems Limited and Serendib Hotels for the past six years, said they are happy the competition achieved its main purpose of bringing people together to celebrate Christmas.
