Three bands have booked their place at the national finals of the Chibuku Road to Fame music contest slated for August.

The groups— Khalidwe Band, African Mingoli and Dikamawoko— outshined seven other bands to emerge tops at a regional showdown held at the Limbe Chibuku Tavern in Blantyre.

Musicians Association of Malawi (MAM) treasurer Young Chilaga said the competition was stiff. He, therefore, hailed the winning bands chosen by a panel of three judges, headed by veteran Overtone Chimombo, who started singing gospel last year.

According to him, 10 bands have registered to contest in the Central Region on June 28 and eight in the north on July 28.

Chibuku Products Limited (CPL) senior market development manager Charles Kamanga hailed the winning bands.

“We are impressed not only with the bands, but also the lively audience,” said Kamanga.

Both Dikamawoko director Taonga Nkhonjera and African Mingoli’s Papa Mtume said they would go back to the drawing board and sharpen their performance for the national showcase.

Winners in the competition will get a K250 000 recording deal from CPL and K150 000 cash. Runners up will get K100 000 while third placed band will get K75 000. The regional finalists will each get    K50 000.
