Spell Master competition in national finals

The National Spell Master Spelling Bee competition grand finale takes place this Saturday at Mount Sinai International School in Lilongwe

Thirty-five spellers from all regions across Malawi will take to the stage to find the star of English vocabulary and the best ICT girl of this season.spell mastre

Sponsored by Plan Malawi, the competition will feature junior and senior categories for primary and secondary school spellers respectively, apart from the ICT award for girls in the senior category.

The ICT category, sponsored by Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (Macra), involves defining terms as well as spelling out words used in ICT vocabulary.

The 35 spellers qualified from the preliminary stage spelling bees that took place across the country and then the regional finals held in Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu. Over 500 spellers took part this season and only 35 have made it to the final.

Said the competitions director, Lewis Mbaula; “The junior champion speller will win a trophy, Samsung Galaxy Tab4 and MK200 000 from A1 biscuits, the senior champion speller wins a trophy, Samsung Galaxy Tablet and MK300 000 from A1 biscuits and the girl ICT champion will win a trophy, K200 000 and Samsung Galaxy Tablet.”

Standard Bank is sponsoring the trophies while the tablets have been sponsored by Macra.  Among other prizes, all the finalists for this season will receive textbooks from National Library Service, Luntha exercise books, biscuit hampers, certificates and shoe shopping vouchers from Bata and computers for the champion schools. Chloride Batteries shall give K100 000 each to the junior and senior champion schools. Other companies that have made the spelling bee a success story are Airtel, Fattani Offset Printers and Axa.
