Southern Region Football League (SRFL) has hailed their Premier Division side Evirom’s remarkable run in the ongoing K20 million (about $60 000) Carlsberg Cup.

Evirom is the only lower-league side that has qualified for the semi-finals of the competition. They beat Blue Eagles Reserves 2-0 on Saturday.

SRFL chairperson Trouble Kalua and general secretary George Pagaja took turns in praising Evirom.

“We are proud of Evirom’s exploits in the Carlsberg Cup and their remarkable run confirms that given a chance, our teams can compete with the best on the land,” said Kalua.

On his part, Pagaja said Evirom’s achievement is testimony that the gulf in class between the top-flight Super League and the second-tier league is not that big.

“It is also testimony that our league is well managed and that we have quality teams,” said Pagaja.

He also said he has no doubt that Evirom can make it to the finals.

The team’s patron, Emmanuel Nkuluzado Viola, attributed the team’s feat to the rebuilding it went through at the start of the season.

“We have a pool of talented young players who are committed. Our trainer Paul Kachingwe also deserves special mention although he has no coaching qualifications worth mentioning. Simply put, there is good team spirit,” said Viola.

Evirom will face Blue Eagles on Saturday in the semi-finals.
