The Peter Mutharika Southern Region Football League (SRFL) 2012/13 season will kick off on August 11, the league’s chairperson Trouble Kalua has announced.

Kalua on Monday said the country’s oldest football league would first hold an annual general meeting on August 5 in Blantyre before the season’s kick-off.

“Registration of teams commences immediately. Despite the economic challenges, the registration fees will not be raised and shall remain at K80 000. Teams with outstanding balances will be required to clear all arrears and settle at least half of this season’s fees,” said Kalua.

“Teams that do not comply by kick-off date will automatically forfeit points straight away as full fixtures for each weekend will be released in the usual manner. The maximum number of teams in each division is 20. As usual, the league will operate with any such number of teams (not exceeding 20) as are willing to participate and fulfil our minimum requirements.”

The forthcoming season will see SRFL welcoming back into the Premier Division Zomba United and Cobbe Barracks who were relegated last season from the TNM Super League.

New entrants into the second tier Premier Division are Zomba Air Wing and Machinga ADD who got elevated from Division One. They are stepping in third tier division for relegated Tigers Reserve, Rock United and Blackpool.

SRFL hosted its previous season’s prize presentation on Saturday at Bvumbwe ground where sponsor Democratic Progressive Party interim leader Professor Peter Mutharika assured of continued support for the three-year duration of the contract signed last year
