Nandolo: Structures should be disability-friendly

Blantyre City Council chief executive officer Ted Nandolo has urged stakeholders to take disability issues seriously by providing the disabled with necessary support in a bid to implement government‘s effort to address challenges they face.

Nandolo made the appeal during the presentation ceremony of Malawi Disability Directory from Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare in Blantyre on Friday.

“There is a lot that we can do in order to mitigate problems which people with disabilities face in the country. For instance, we can rehabilitate some of the already existing structures to be disability-friendly,” said Nandolo.

On the directory, Nandolo decried the tendency of some government officers who “just dump” such important documents in their offices.

In his remarks, deputy secretary of disability programmes in the ministry, Issac Katopola, commended Baylor College of Medicine for working in collaboration with his ministry to come up with the directory.

“I’m grateful to Baylor [College of Medicine] and my ministry staff for the work well done; it required a lot of consultations,” said Katopola.

The directory is an update of the one that was developed in 2005 which is aimed at ensuring co- ordination of service delivery and networking among disability service organisations.
