Standard Bank moves to rescue Embangweni Hospital
People of Embangweni in Mzimba can now finally chorus Halleluyah after Standard Bank Malawi answered their prayer for medical supplies with a K10 million donation for Embangweni Mission Hospital.
The bank’s donation, set to be officially presented today, is in response to media reports earlier this month about the dire shortage of medical supplies and drugs at the hospital due to debts owed to various suppliers.
The hospital is run by the Livingstonia Synod of the Church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP).
The crisis prompted the CCAP congregation and others in the area to seek divine intervention through special prayers held at a secluded mountain in the area.
Standard Bank chairperson of Corporate Social Responsibility and head of Information Technology (IT) William Nuka said: “The plight of Embangweni Hospital is one that has touched our hearts and compelled us to do something in aid of our brothers and sisters in this area.”
Nuka said like many Malawians living in rural and remote areas, people of Embangweni experience difficulties to access medical care from referral hospitals and rely on health centres within their community.
He said as a responsible corporate citizen, Standard Bank has been a partner of the country’s health sector for many years and that assistance to Embangweni Hospital was in line with that spirit.
Embangweni Mission Hospital serves about 55 000 people in Mzimba South and surrounding areas. n
