Story Ink Africa to hold storytelling sessions in BT, LL

The Story Ink Africa is set to hold its first story telling sessions in Blantyre and Lilongwe following its rebranding from Storytelling Malawi

In Blantyre, the event will take place this Saturday at Jacaranda while the Lilongwe edition will take place on February 23 at Lilongwe Wildlife Centre.

Mbvundula: There is much untapped talent

The theme for the storytelling sessions is In My Feelings, and it is inspired by a song by rapper Drake and the month of February.

One of Story Ink Africa founders and creative director Ekari Mbvundula says the idea is to cultivate a culture of writing and reading sessions to an audience as opposed to individual reading.

“All our writers in Blantyre are new showing that there is so much untapped talent and we are glad to be the first to discover it. For the Lilongwe session, both writers who have been attending our story telling events throughout 2018 before we took a different key and new writers will participate.

In Blantyre, we have a line-up of six writers, namely Perfect Kashoti, Abdullah Juma, Barbra Nyirongo, Joyce Nyirongo, Lusayo Mulaga and Innocent Mangulama.

“We will also have a special performance by Constance Thyangathyanga, who is one half of the cast of the successful touring stage play Taking Madiba. She will be performing a dramatic piece under the theme, In My Feelings.

“The six writers in Lilongwe will be Mozesi Makwawa, Mphatso Mary Mkwambisi and Shiela Sithembile Goliati as new faces while Tamanda Kanjaye, Beatus Msamange and Shivani Shetty are returning. Spicing up the event in Lilongwe will be Zathu Band which will perform its brand new single,” said Mbvundula.

In an interview, Juma, who started writing in September last year, said the sessions are important as they accord writers a platform for getting instant feedback as well as learning from others.
